in 2018 the Evergreen board resolved to gift the community with a landmark project designed to celebrate the concept that art, music, architecture, and nature are inextricably linked in the human experience, each making the others more powerful.
Evergreen commissioned Mitch Hager to design a cultural center meant to accommodate a broad range of community activities and connect port street to the town of Easton. The multi-use facility allocates space for the youth and adult rowing programs that the property is home to; provides indoor and outdoor space for events including regattas, Waterfowl Festival, music venues, Chesapeake Music, Plein Air Easton, Chesapeake Film Festival; and provides space for other curated art exhibits including significant local artists, artists in residency, performance space, and involvement of other mediums including outdoor sculpture space and film.
To that end, a lot of work has been accomplished in three years as we have undertaken a project designed to preserve the only significant green space for Easton’s future waterfront. Continuing stewardship of this land is a high priority for this project as the current plan for Easton Point is slated for high density development. The modern architectural approach of this project would be the most significant environmentally sensitive project in the history of Talbot County, and has already received preliminary approvals from the Easton Planning Commission, Maryland’s Department of Environment, and the Army Corps of Engineers. There has also been significant support from various non-profits including ShoreRivers, Midshore Community Foundation, The Y of the Chesapeake, Chesapeake Music, and others who are strong supporters and advocates for this vision.
